Trails Master Plan

Building Trails. Connecting Communities. Inspiring Adventures.

Over the next 20 years, MWCD will transform outdoor recreation in Ohio through its Trails Master Plan (TMP)—a comprehensive strategy to design and build nearly 300 miles of interconnected trails across MWCD lakes, parks, and campgrounds.

The plan reflects what visitors and residents value most. In recent surveys, 87% of MWCD park users ranked trails as their top amenity, echoing statewide findings that trails are Ohio’s most requested recreational feature. The plan includes new trails for hiking, biking, equestrian use, and accessible recreation will connect visitors to nature, strengthen local communities, and boost Ohio’s outdoor economy. With more than 246 miles of new trails planned, this initiative is one of the most comprehensive trail projects in the state.

The Trails Master Plan ensures that future generations can explore, connect, and thrive in the natural beauty of the watershed.

Direction for the Next 20 Years

The Trails Master Plan was approved by the MWCD Board of Directors in August 2025 and provides a 20-year strategy to develop 297 miles of trails, divided into three phases. The goal is to add approximately 12 miles of new trails each year.

  • 2026-2029 – Phase 1 focuses on priority projects considered “high impact, lower cost”
  • 2030-2037 – Phase 2 involves construction to complete the MWCD Trail core network.
  • 2038-2045 – Phase 3 will focus on completing the Trails Project.
