2014 Leatherwood Creek/Narrows Road Logjam Removal
General

Problem Description

The debris removal that we are targeting for this project in Center Township is located in Leatherwood Creek at GPS coordinates 39*59’41”N and 81*29’59”W. This jam is located at a bend in the creek and is causing erosion, flooding and other issues.

The area that this jam is in has been susceptible to flooding in the past and since this is a major state route any potential flooding will disrupt the local economic activities in this part of the county. Also, the jam is located at a bend in the creek and is causing ample erosion and flooding issues.  The debris is located upstream from a railroad bridge and there is potential for future physical damage to the superstructure of the bridge.  The goal of this project is to successfully remove the logjams and flood debris and to move it to an area that is away from potential flooding (to ensure that it does not end up back into the water ways).

Solution Description

The success of this project will be determined by the decrease in flooding issues furing periods of heavy rain with the primary benefactors being the residents of Center Township, Kipling and Lore City. Also, Center Township will be using the Guernsey County Community Development Corporations road crews for this work.  They have the manpower and equipment necessary to complete this daunting task.  In addition their workforce development program helps individuals who have suffered from long-term unemployment by giving them the training and skills necessary to seek employment in the construction industry.
