2014 Determination of % of Organic Matter in Soils
General
Problem Description
The Ohio State University Extension in Muskingum County requested financial assistance for a study on the organic matter of soils in Muskingum County. The proposed project will add an additional analysis of the organic matter present in the soils in these samples. The proposed project would analyze 200 soil samples for row crops.
Solution Description
The project will provide a baseline for the percentage of organic matter in soils in Muskingum County. By knowing the amount or organic matter in soils, farmers can determine precisely how much lime and fertilizer is required for corn and soybean crop production. Additionally, the analysis of the organic matter present in the soils will determine the effectiveness of conservation practices in agriculture. Effective soil conservation and nutrient management practices significantly reduce soil and nutrient runoff.
The OSU Extension office currently performs soil samples for farmers to determine lime and fertilizer recommendations.
