2013 USGS StreamStats Pilot Project Grant
General

Problem Description

USGS, ODNR, OWDA (Ohio Water Development Authority), and MWCD are collaborating on a pilot project to develop software and databases that will permit the USGS StreamStats web-based application to provide monthly and annual water-use information (withdrawals, discharges, and net water use) associated with the Tuscarawas River and the Cuyahoga River watersheds.

With the continuing interest in water resources throughout the Tuscarawas River watershed, there is an increasing need to be able to quickly assess the cumulative quantity of upstream water uses at specific stream locations. Information such as this is required to make more informed decisions about the potential to support new and/or increased water uses. More specifically, the end result of this pilot project will allow MWCD to better monitor water withdrawals in its reservoir sub-watersheds.

Solution Description

The software and tools developed for this pilot project will provide a framework for a future statewide water-use application. The results of this research will be available through the USGS StreamStats web application at: http://water.usgs.gov/osw/streamstats/ohio/html and will also be published in a USGS Scientific Investigations Report.

Total project cost is $110,000 with OWDA providing $55,000 in the form of a grant, ODNR providing $15,000 in the form of in-kind services, leaving MWCD with a PWM grant amount of $40,000 to complete the project. PWM funds will be used to develop the application in the Tuscarawas River watershed only.
