2013 Leatherwood Creek/ State Route 256 Log Jam Removal
General
Problem Description
The debris removal that we are targeting for this project in Center Township is located between Leatherwood Creek at GPS coordinates 40*0017’N 81*30’56W and 40*0018N 81*30’54W. These particular jams are pushed up against two bridges in water that flows under State Route 265.
The area that these two major jams are located in has been susceptible to flooding in the past and since this is a major state route any potential flooding will disrupt the local economic activities in this part of the county. Also, the jams are pushed up against two bridges, one of which takes St Rt. 265 over Leatherwood Creek. Should additional debris flow down this creek the possibility for extensive damage to the structure of the bridge is a possibility.
Solution Description
The goal of this project is to successfully remove the logjams and flood debris and to move it to an area that is away from potential flooding (to ensure that it does not end up back into the water ways). The success of this project will be determined by the decrease in flooding issues during periods of heavy rain with the primary benefactors being the residents of Center Township, Kipling and Lore City. Also, Center Township will be using Guernsey County Community Development Corporations road crews for this work. They have the man power and equipment necessary to complete this daunting task. In addition, their workforce development program helps individuals who have suffered from long-term unemployment by giving them the training and skills necessary to seek employment in the construction industry.
