2013 Huff Run/ Mud Run Environmental Education and Public Outreach

Problem Description

Rural Action requested funds to continue and expand the environmental education and public outreach in the Huff Run and Mud Run watersheds.

Primary benefactors of these educational programs include school children, their teachers, parents, and community members. The programming will increase public awareness on conservation, watershed management, and acid mine drainage remediation activities.

Solution Description

Funds will be used to coordinate and organize Awareness Days and WISE Days field trips; to conduct professional workshops for teachers and educators; to organize and hold three-day watershed day camps in both watersheds for children ages 6-13 focusing on watershed management; to organize and coordinate community festivals in the villages of Mineral City and Tuscarawas highlighting watershed awareness; to publish and disseminate newsletters for all watershed residents; and to facilitate a series of roundtable discussions of partnering agencies, stakeholders and residents on watershed issues.

Location Information

Huff Run is located in Carroll and Tuscarawas Counties near Mineral City. Mud Run is located in Tuscarawas County near the Village of Tuscarawas.

This grant was approved by the Board of Directors on March 15, 2013.  This grant was completed in Fall 2014.
