September 24, 2021
The Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District (MWCD) recently held a Legislative Day at the newly constructed Tappan Lake Marina and Tappan Lake Park, hosting elected officials, legislative staff, economic development representatives, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). The day-long event held on Friday, September 17 included updates and briefings on the activities and important work happening within the watershed in addition to tours of some of the recent accomplishments at Tappan Lake.
“As a political subdivision of the State of Ohio, MWCD is often impacted by the legislative actions at all levels of government,” said Craig Butler, MWCD Executive Director. “We strive to have positive working relationships with our elected officials and their staffs, and regional and state economic development professionals.”
Attended by 35 individuals, the Legislative Day event provided an opportunity for attendees to better understand the work that MWCD provides regarding conservation, recreation, water quality, natural resources and land management practices, engineering operations, as well as economic impacts and employment opportunities. Members of the audience also heard from Colonel Jayson Putnam, the newly appointed Commander of the USACE’s Huntington District. Colonel Putnam discussed the valued relationship and collaborative work that MWCD and the USACE continue to embrace to maintain the 14 dams and two levees in the Muskingum Watershed Basin. Additionally, MWCD provided an update on Maintenance Assessment investments and assistance available to communities for water quality improvement projects.
“Legislative Day provided us with a chance to showcase the positive and significant changes that we have made in the last few years that impact the constituencies of elected officials and the economic contributions our locations have to their areas and to the region,” said Craig Butler. “We want to these folks to know they can use MWCD as a resource and feel comfortable asking for our assistance, and occasions like this introduce legislators and development professionals to our expert staff.”
The MWCD intends to host future Legislative Days throughout the district.
