Ski event back for 2nd year at Charles Mill Lake

April 4, 2008

A popular water ski tournament held at Charles Mill Lake during 2007 will be back on two weekends in August this year pending final approval from the state.

The Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District (MWCD) Board of Directors recently approved the events of the International Novice Tour League for Aug. 1-3 and Aug. 15-17 in the Mud Lake area of Charles Mill Lake. The MWCD manages Charles Mill Lake along with 13 other reservoirs in a coordinated system in the Muskingum River Watershed for flood reduction and water conservation, including use of the lake for recreation.

The ski tournaments will be hosted by Charles Mill Marina and Tony and Mari Colace of Mansfield, directors of Out of the Boat Watersports, a family-oriented organization that teaches water sports skills to youth and adults. According to the Colaces, the primary goal of the International Novice Tour League is to encourage new and up-and-coming water sports athletes to participate in fun competitions.

Board members were informed by MWCD staff that no negative feedback following the tournaments was reported in 2007 and that participants said the lake offered excellent ski conditions. Spectator attendance also was higher than usual for the International Novice Tour League events, according to MWCD staff.

The vast majority of the lake is unaffected by the tournament action, according to tournament organizers and MWCD staff.

The tournaments include setting up a slalom course on Thursday, practice on Friday and tournament competitions on Saturday and Sunday. Tournament organizers said no more than two ski-tow watercraft would be in the ski zone at any one time during the two tournament weekends. The Mud Lake area also will not be closed to routine boat traffic during the tournament weekends, but that portion of the lake temporarily will be designated as a no-wake zone.

In addition, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources' (ODNR) Division of Watercraft has said it supports the tournaments because they increase awareness of boating opportunities and promote boating involvement among youth. As it did in 2007, the Division of Watercraft will need to approve a temporary boat-motor horsepower exemption for participating boats in the ski tournaments.
