“It would be impossible to estimate the impact of flooding in our county without the dams,” she said. “Plus, we have a potential for receiving over $8.5 million in projects for our county alone for things like sediment removal, road raising and matching dollars for state and federal grants.” Montgomery, who with her family farms 378 acres specializing in beef cattle and greenhouse production, keeps in touch with her constituents through activity in many organizations including the Farm Bureau and Grange. “We're extremely grateful to our forefathers who had the idea for the MWCD,” she said. “It would be impossible to live along the Muskingum River without this flood control asset. In fact, you can still see the high water marks on some downtown buildings from the 1913 flooding.” The 2005 flooding would have been much worse without the protection of the MWCD dams, Montgomery added. “We're still fixing roads, slips and home damage from that flooding, but thank goodness we didn't lose any lives." Admiring the beauty of the MWCD network of reservoirs, she noted: “It's mind boggling how beautiful a lake or stream can be, and then the storms hit. We think it can never happen to us, but it can. In New Orleans, they thought they would never have troubles with their dams and levies, and many in our area feel the same way. But look what happened when Hurricane Katrina hit.”
