Army Corps of Engineers to increase water releases from dams in Muskingum system
MARCH 2, 2011
HUNTINGTON, WV - The Huntington District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is increasing water releases at its dams throughout the Muskingum Basin in Ohio. These dams have been holding back high water levels, reducing the risk of downstream flooding. Controlled releases will begin to reduce levels being held behind the dams, to prepare for future precipitation. These controlled releases will not result in downstream flooding.
The Corps is closely monitoring water levels and personnel are on site to perform instrumentation monitoring and general surveillance at the projects.
The Corps continues to coordinate with the Tuscarawas County officials regarding pool elevations.
Flood damage reduction in the Muskingum Basin is achieved by a combination of reservoirs and levees. Holding back excess water in the reservoirs reduces the maximum height of floodwaters in downstream areas.
