'Polar Bear Dip' at Charles Mill Lake draws more than 140 swimmers
The swimming beach at Charles Mill Lake Park is usually a quiet and lonely place during the winter months.
But for the past four years, that all changes on New Year's Day.
The Fourth Annual Polar Bear Dip that allows participants to take a quick - and very cold - swim at the beach was held Friday, Jan. 1, 2010, to benefit the American Cancer Society. A total of 146 people participated and were dressed in everything from regular bathing suits to bikinis and even some pink Speedo suits, according to published reports.
The event was organized by Chad Scrack as a "harebrained idea with me and my friends," he told the Ashland Times-Gazette. Scrack said a total of $5,500 was raised through the event.
Rangers from Charles Mill Lake Park and deputies from the Ashland County Sheriff's Department assisted with the event in the water while wearing their cold water rescue suits.
