Flood reduction in MWCD communities
during January 2005

The dams and reservoirs in the Muskingum River Watershed region reduce flooding along the various creeks, streams and rivers during periods of heavy rainfall.

During the early portion of January, the system was challenged with one of the most significant periods of flooding in many years. While some problems were reported due to the high water, about $400 million in potential property damage was saved and flooding was reduced in many communities.

Following is a list of several communities in the MWCD region where the situation could have been more severe if the dams and reservoirs had not been constructed. The list includes the community, the river in the community, the actual crest of the river during the recent rain event and the estimated crest without the dams and reservoirs.
