Flood Reduction Projects

Much needed flood reduction projects, including upgrades to dams, culverts and bridges; raising and relocating critical roads; and other infrastructure projects are the most visible needs in the District. The system’s dams and reservoirs have remained much the same since their construction in the 1930s and must be brought into compliance with federal regulations. Short-term fixes, supported by limited revenue sources, have maintained the system, but now, modernization – not just maintenance – is required to keep up with changes in land use and rapidly increasing development.

Protection of Water Quality

The region’s growing population is putting pressure on the water and sewer systems. Mining practices of the past have contributed to polluted water finding its way into some reservoirs. Stream contamination now threatens water quality. An assessment will help monitor and improve the quality of water and protect vital water sources for local communities.

Sediment Removal, Including Reservoir Dredging

Some erosion is natural, but many lakes are filling in with sediment at higher rates than expected due to upstream erosion and an aging reservoir system that has functioned 20 years beyond its original design life. This buildup of sedimentation not only affects the aquatic ecosystem and recreation, but also threatens flood-storage capabilities as the reservoirs fill in with the sediment.

Shoreline Protection to Reduce Erosion Damage

Sedimentation begins with eroding stream banks. Dredging reservoirs is a necessary short-term solution, but long-term solutions to control the erosion that causes sedimentation build-up are imperative. An assessment will help facilitate Watershed management work, assisting local interest groups and private property owners with programs to reduce sediment and pollution.
